In relation to what?

Quell, when I first saw those screenshots of Baroque you posted, they reminded me of a survival horror game whose name I've just recalled: Galerians.

He's probably still criticizing Killer7.

BUT HEY, I bought Dead Space Extraction anyway today and I'll tell you all how much I hate it soon!

Recently I've been fascinated with a game called Baroque which is probably the most Blame!-esque video game I've ever played. It's originally a game that was released in the 90s for Sega Saturn and again for the Playstation, but not so long ago it got remade for the PS2 and Wii. Mind you the remake is NOT decisively superior to the original but it is easier (not necessarily a bad thing), more playable and most importantly localized to the English language.

While at first glance it might look like a fantasy game, it's actually quite sci-fi...with highly ritualized technology and a mysterious sinister religious order prevalent throughout. The protagonist is an undying amnesiac given a poweful gun and a mission (sound familiar?) to descend to the bottom of the enigmatic 'Neuro Tower' which is packed to the brim with very weird, twisted beings.

Image

Along the way you'll encounter a lot of strange victims of a calamity that has seemingly destroyed the world, and uncover the mystery behind your own identity and your place in this hellish world.

Image

Nothing will be handed to you though, not the plot nor the gameplay. It's up to you to figure things out (the game steadfastly refuses to hold your hand) and not only is the tower full of horrible traps and its inhabitants both numerous and deadly, but when you die (and you will die, a lot) you will wake up outside the tower with no items and no levels. In fact, this happens each time you reach the bottom of the tower.

Wow, that DOES sound extremely Blame!-ish. I should check it out :-D

Holy crap this game's awesome.

And VERY much on topic, it's pretty much Biomega as a complete Cosmic Horror Story.

Well I'm probably the only guy with a Wii that cares, but if that's not the case then anyone else should grab this, it's the best game to be playing on it right now.

Ooh, I've been meaning to try that one out for ages. It's pretty cheap on Amazon too. If only I had more free time

For what I heard, it's not particularly good, so you may be better off with watching playthroughs.

Though it's always fun to watch something so adamantly dark and gritty shoot its mood in the foot with awful writing and voice acting.

I've gotten past the first section and you're correct on all counts, especially the last :)

However it's not terribly bad either and survival horror is hard to come by these days. Plus I liked the movie 'Scanners'

But this new one, for Wii and PS2, do not seem too similar. It was released last year:

The original Baroque is much more atmospheric and creepy. To be honest, I like it much better than the PS2/Wii version. However it's never been translated. This makes it hard to deal with the much steeper difficulty curve since the game pretty much hinges on being able to tell what items you've picked up.

I wish some kind translation group would tackle Baroque PSX.

This is made by the awesome demogroup plastic. It is no real game, just a more interactive demo. At some points in the demo you have to move or press a button. But you don´t know when. So you have to watch, when the screen gets flickering during moving of the gamepad, you have to move more, till the screen stops and a new episode starts. But nice to watch.

A shocking dark 3D shooter. The combination of 3D shooter with movie style horror elements was new and very well implemented. The game was made from the team of "Condemned Criminal Origins" and after that milestone they recycled some of the scenes in FEAR. Condemned was not so commercial popular, but FEAR was. So often is FEAR called as the best horror game. Although it is a good game with nice KI and good effects. After you played it some time it gets boring because the game mechanic is always the same.
First: "Fighting soldiers"
Second: "some horror scenes"
Third: "Fighting soldiers"....etc

Dark Sector is pretty damn Nihei-esque, with an unbalanced central protagonist empowered by a body horror virus, all set in an Eastern European landscape.

Nice.

I think that Nihei would love it...
